MEDICAL SERVICE STUDY AREA (MSSA) RECONFIGURATION

An effort to reconfigure medical service study areas is currently underway following the release of the 2010 census data. With new data on population and poverty levels, frontier, rural and urban MSSAs will be examined and may need to be reconfigured, based upon community stakeholder input and examination by the California Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission (CHWPC). OSHPD’s Healthcare Workforce Development Division staff will facilitate community meetings and provide data and criteria to stakeholders in order to assist them in reaching consensus on proposed boundaries.

MSSAs are adopted by the Federal Office of Shortage Designation to be “rational service areas” for purposes of designating Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), Medically Underserved Areas and Populations (MUAs/MUPs). Changes to the boundaries of MSSAs can only be made through motions adopted by the CHWPC. Regional community meetings will be scheduled to gather input and support from stakeholders. Additional information will be shared when available.
