Riverside City Campus Teacher Preparation and Education Programs, Career Technical Education Teacher Pipeline Project is in full swing. Currently our Automotive, Auto Body, Banking and Finance, Business, Construction, Cosmetology, Computer Information Systems, Culinary Arts, Digital Media and Graphics, Early Childhood Studies, Paralegal, Physicians Assistant, Paralegal and Television and Video Production students are in local high schools acquiring hands-on service learning experience in the class rooms!
Because the program has been such a success we are a looking to expand by adding more students from each of the Career Technical Education fields. If you know of an exceptional student in a CTE subject and he or she wants to teach, have them contact: Aaron Petroff, Outreach Specialist at (951) 328-3839.
Student Successes
The outstanding work of RCC Photography students will go on display in the Student Activities office on October 2nd and be available for viewing through November 14th. Some of the photographs are for sale, so stop by to see what our students are creating.
The National SkillsUSA Competition was held in June, in Kansas City. We had students participate from baking, photo, culinary, and advertising. Here are the results:
Brittanie Froesch 9th in the nation, Photography
Michelle Schrokosch 8th in the nation, Advertising Design
Julio Saldana 11th in the nation, Commercial Baking
Mayda Salas 1st in the nation, Graphic Communications
Federico Gaitan 5th in the nation, Culinary Arts
The new two-color Heidelberg Printmaster offset press has been installed, which Mayda Salas won as the first place winner at the National SkillsUSA competition in June. The press, valued at $80,000 is a needed addition to the Applied Digital Media & Printing department, as it meets AQMD regulations and affords students an industry-standard experience. The press class, meeting on M/W evenings, is getting the full benefit of using the press, and the District Printing & Graphics Center is using it in full production. The terms of the agreement are such that RCC receives free full-use of the press for one year, then is offered a purchase price of $50,000 at the end of the year. Thanks to Mayda for representing the State of California and RCC so well, and to Heidelberg by supporting SkillsUSA. (Mayda Salas got married September 27th…congratulations!).
RCC Holds 4th Annual Cosmetology Student Competition. This event had over 100 competitors from throughout the state. RCC took home 8 trophies. 2nd and 3rd place school trophies, 2nd and 3rd nails and 2nd and 3rd hair. The event is sanctioned by world renowned National Cosmetology Association. Over $10,000 dollars worth of prizes were award to all competitors. Special thanks to Karen Stadick, RCC Faculty, student competition coach.
Junior Matthew Wilson was awarded a $250 scholarship from Riverside Employee Advisory Council for his continuing education at the Riverside City College Culinary Academy.
New Faces
Marsha Brown, after many years as an adjunct faculty member, has become a full-time faculty member in the Cosmetology department.
Susan Farrington, MSN, RN, has joined the Nursing faculty as a one-year assignment. Susan is a graduate of both our LVN and ADN Programs. She comes to us with lots of varied experience and we are sure that Susan will add much to our faculty!
Miscellaneous/Other
Peter Westbrook has been appointed by the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges to the Occupational Education Committee for the 2008-2009 academic year.
SkillsUSA recognized our Junior Chef Instructor Chef David Avalos on his involvement and achievements as an advisor in the national skills competition, specifically within 2008 SkillsUSA.
The Riverside City College Culinary Academy volunteered alongside American Legion for the annual Military Appreciation Day held at March Air Base Reserve Saturday, September 13, 2008. The Culinary Academy participated in the Riverside City College Outreach program Career Fair located at the Riverside Convention Center on Monday, September 29, 2008. The Culinary Academy featured several demonstrations for the event including: ice sculpting, cake decorating, and crepes.
Some faculty/administrators attended the National League for Nursing Educational Summit in San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 14-20. Among those participants, many of these presented poster and/or paper presentations. Dr. Sandy Baker, Dr. Anita Kinser, Dr. Trisha Tutor, and Dr. Phyllis Rowe presented at this national conference. There are thousands of submissions to present at this conference and it speaks highly of RCCD and the Nursing Program that we had many of our submissions accepted for presentation
Color, motion and joy describe instructor Matt Farris’ amazing photographs of koi fish on display in the 2008 Faculty Exhibition in the Quad Gallery. Matt spent more than a year of Tuesdays at the Huntington Library in San Marino perfecting the techniques that resulted in these unique photographs – none of which are digitally manipulated. Stop by the gallery between September 22nd and October 20th.
