Embedding basic skills class offered online

May 01, 2009

“Several projects on campus—the AWE committee, Hewlett Foundation Grant (Leaders in Student Success Award), Basic Skills Initiative, and the distance education grant (Title III)— have converged to create an exciting all-college learning opportunity. Beginning this summer, we’re offering Embedding Basic Skills into Course/Program Content, a fully online course for teaching basic skills that are applicable in the classroom as well as in our college services,” said Patricia Harrelson, designer of the curriculum and course instructor.

INDIS 170AW/Section 0966 uses a combination of reading and online discussion boards. The summer course will run from July 6 to August 14. It will be offered again in the fall as Section 1807 from September 28 to November 6. Participants will investigate ways to incorporate basic skills development into their classes or at their campus work sites, such as admissions and records, the bookstore, or health services office, according to Harrelson. “The underlying principle of this course is that skill development is an institution-wide, core responsibility. Its scope encompasses every aspect of our campus and is helpful for both staff and faculty, including adjuncts,” she said. “With the flexibility of an online course, more people will be able to enroll. Plus, an additional perk is the chance for staff to become familiar with the Blackboard interface used by the college for online instruction.” For more information, Harrelson can be contacted harrelsonp@yosemite.edu.
