FCS FLASH <http://www.cccfcs.com/FCS/Default.aspx?tabid=101> : Making New Connections!
Good learning, like good work, is collaborative and social principles_for_good_practice_in_teaching_and_learning , not competitive and isolated. A friendly, supportive classroom environment facilitates learning. That is why you want to set the "right <link> " tone the very first day. You want students to have an opportunity to get to know each other and get to know you too. Get your students involved in making some new connections with the active learning exercise outlined below.
- Welcome students and give them a short intro into your course.
- Explain that you expect students to teach and learn from each other and the activity you want them to complete will give them an opportunity to make some new connections.
- Distribute the attached handout, How Do We Connect?
- Give students about five minutes to answer the 10 questions.
- Ask students, you too, to move around the class reading other's responses and signing the sheets of those with matches to their own.
- After 10 minutes, have students return to their seats and discuss their new connections. (Who got the most matches? Which questions were the toughest to match? What questions did they add? How will this activity help them in this class?)
FYI: Good teaching is the creating of those circumstances that lead to significant learning in others. Donald L. Finkel, Teaching With Your Mouth Shut <link>
