Employers have asked for this.
Now you can deliver it!

DESCRIPTION:
The Next Skills Institute (NSI) curriculum develops in the workforce a wide range of interrelated soft and technical skills identified by employers as critical to work success. Skilled, seasoned trainers and faculty members are invited to attend this two-day train-the-trainer workshop for their participating community colleges or partnering Workforce Investment Boards!

BACKGROUND:
Employers from high-growth sectors throughout California and across the nation have identified interrelated skills which workers must master for businesses to increase their competitiveness and fully realize the potential of their employees. A lack of these often misnamed "soft skills," better defined as "next generation" or "Next Skills," often prevent employees from remaining employed, being promoted, or pursuing career paths. Job seekers also lose marketability due to the lack of these skills.

A review of eleven workforce studies identified eight categories of skills that were most frequently reported by up to 82% of employers surveyed as "most important." These eight categories have been developed into eight, unique 8-hour training courses which fill and strengthen the employee skill gaps that employers nationwide have consistently identified.

  • The curriculum is customized for the diversity of California. In not only the Diversity course, but also the Listening and Interpersonal Skills courses, participants see the link between people's differences and the value those differences offer.
  • It combines, upgrades, and re-introduces soft skills usually offered individually in similar programs, like critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and collaboration.
  • It adds two, key, higher-level skill areas: creativity and technology and introduces future skills workers will need, like emotional intelligence.
  • The dynamic training materials are enriched by abundant hands-on activities, case studies, engaging videos, discussions, surveys and checklists. Participants cannot "pass" the class unless they are fully engaged in these class activities, demonstrating that they understand the concepts and can apply the skills.
  • Workers who complete this program will have demonstrated in class that they can: solve problems by making thoughtful decisions based on creative and critical thinking; recognize the importance of valuing and respecting people's differences; become familiar with today's computer technologies and how to operate them safely; effectively listen, reducing mistakes; communicate clearly to others; better manage their time, emotions, and attitude; better understand customer needs and build better work relationships to meet them; and better handle conflict and adapt their own behavior in teams to collaborate more effectively.
  • Both current and potential employees with a Next Skills Institute certificate in hand offer a competitive advantage.
